Kiwis brilliance casts shadow on Pakistan’s semifinal ambition

NZ registers convincing victory over SL

New Zealand on Thursday showcased their dominance by overpowering Sri Lanka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, India, taking a significant step towards securing a spot in the World Cup 2023 semi-finals.

New Zealand’s exceptional performance against Sri Lanka has also cast a shadow over Pakistan’s aspirations for a spot in the World Cup semifinals.

The Kiwis, determined to bounce back after a four-match slump, chased down the 172-run target set by Sri Lanka with remarkable ease, sealing a commanding five-wicket victory in just 23.2 overs.

The foundation of New Zealand’s triumph was laid by their openers, Devon Conway (45) and Rachin Ravindra (42), who provided a blistering start to the chase. Daryl Mitchell (43) further bolstered their charge, steering the team closer to victory.

The Kiwis’ captain, Kane Williamson, made a strategic decision to bowl after winning the toss, a move that paid off handsomely. Seamers Trent Boult (3-37) and Tim Southee (1-52) wreaked havoc in the Sri Lankan top order, leaving them reeling at 32-3 within five overs.

Despite a resilient effort by Kusal Perera (51), Sri Lanka struggled to find stability as Boult and Mitchell Santner (2-22) inflicted crucial blows.

Lockie Ferguson (2-35) made a triumphant return, further denting Sri Lanka’s hopes. The spirited resistance of Maheesh Theekshana (38 not out) and Dilshan Madushanka (19) in the face of adversity was commendable, but Sri Lanka ultimately succumbed to a modest total of 171 all out in the 47th over.

New Zealand’s victory elevated them to 10 points, placing them at the forefront of the race for the last semi-final spot alongside India, South Africa, and Australia. Meanwhile, Pakistan finds themselves in a precarious position, needing a resounding victory against England to overpower New Zealand on net run rate.
