Maryam Nawaz: PM Can Only Appoint ISI Chief If He Had Been Elected Lawfully

Prime Minister Imran Khan’s displeasure of the army chief’s nomination of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) director general has been described as uncalled for by Maryam Nawaz, who claims that only a “lawfully elected prime minister” may make top appointments to national security organizations.

Maryam Nawaz while speaking to the media on Wednesday (13 October) after attending the proceeding of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) said, “He is a selected prime minister as he has stolen public mandate. He has no legal and moral authority to make a top appointment to the national security organizations.”

She chastised PM Khan for insisting on keeping Lt Gen Faiz Hameed as ISI director-general, alleging that he was involved in political engineering at Mr. Khan’s request.

Mr. Khan’s act of exerting authority, according to Maryam Nawaz, had nothing to do with the principles of democracy and civic supremacy, rather he was striving to keep his power. In addition, she said, “He is trying to follow in the footstep of Nawaz Sharif, but he has forgotten that Mr. Sharif has rendered numerous sacrifices for giving respect to vote.”

She sarcastically stated that Mr. Khan made judgments influenced by “spirits,” adding that “he does this for getting top appointments and not for aiding the general public.”

Reaction of PTI

Ms. Nawaz was reprimanded by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Communication Dr. Shahbaz Gill, who called her disparaging narrative a regrettable action.

During a joint press conference with the Minister of State for Climate Change, Zartaj Gul said the Sharif family has a history of ridiculing opponents through personal attacks, such as when they tossed “objectionable photos” by air at former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

Zartaj Gul described Ms. Nawaz as a foreboding figure whose evil aims had left no one safe, including her father, uncle, and party leadership. Furthermore, she also said that the PML-N leadership made up allegations against Jemima Goldsmith.

Zartaj Gul ended up lashing out at Maryam Nawaz and called her a “discredited woman maligning state institutions.” Moreover, she claimed that Maryam Nawaz has no political standing as she can not even take part in the election on the seat of a councilor. Keeping this in view, her status limits her from throwing her opinions at Imran Khan.

She said, “Maryam Nawaz has questioned the prime minister’s credibility when she possesses no credibility of her own. Imran Khan has received over 17 million votes and is an elected representative of 220m people.”
