SHC Dismissed Agha Siraj Durrani’s Bail Application

The speaker of the Sindh legislature Agha Siraj Durrani has been denied bail by the Sindh High Court in a case of owning assets beyond income.

The court deferred its decision on the bail pleas of 18 defendants, including Agha Siraj Durrani, on Wednesday (13 October).

The bail application had been reserved by a special bench of the Sindh High Court consisting of Justice Naseem Akhtar and Justice Iqbal Kalhoro, but the bail application was reheard at the SHC on the Supreme Court’s direction.

As per the verdict, the court denied bail to eight of the accused, including Durrani, but bail was granted to the other eight, including Durrani’s wife Naheed, daughters, and sons.

NAB Karachi apprehended Agha Siraj in Islamabad in 2019. He is suspected of amassing assets worth Rs1.6 billion that, according to the National Accountability Bureau, are unrelated to his known sources of income.

Durrani’s aides and former employees are among the others named in the lawsuit.

Agha Siraj Durrani has served as the Sindh local government minister from 2008 to 2013 and was subsequently elected Speaker of the Sindh Assembly in 2013, a position he still occupies.
