Kohli’s ton against SA equals Tendulkar’s record

India won match against South Africa

Indian batting linchpin Virat Kohli scored his 49th one-day international (ODI) century, matching the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record.

Kohli made a remarkable innings against South Africa in a World Cup pool match held at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens.

India won the match and this resounding victory marked India’s eighth consecutive win in the tournament, emphasizing their dominant form. The Proteas, on the other hand, faced their second pool defeat following an unexpected loss to the Netherlands, making this defeat all the more surprising.

Kohli’s century, achieved in 119 balls and adorned with 10 fours, was the highlight of India’s commanding total of 326-5. Partnering with Shreyas Iyer, who contributed a solid 77, Kohli led a formidable third-wicket partnership of 134 runs.

India’s potent bowling attack, spearheaded by Ravindra Jadeja swiftly dismantled South Africa, restricting them to a meager 83 runs.

South African captain Temba Bavuma acknowledged the challenge posed by India’s performance, stating, “We know the challenge, know the narrative around us while chasing. Didn’t do it any justice today.”

In a touching tribute, cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar congratulated Kohli, expressing hope that he would soon surpass his record, stating, “Well played Virat. It took me 365 days to go from 49 to 50 (years old) earlier this year. I hope you go from 49 to 50 and break my record in the next few days.”

India’s innings commenced with an explosive start from Rohit Sharma, who contributed a brisk 40 before being caught by Bavuma at mid-off. Kohli, in partnership with Iyer, displayed a blend of patience and aggression, steadily building India’s score. Iyer, who had previously impressed with an 82 against Sri Lanka, played an essential role in the partnership before being dismissed by Lungi Ngidi.
