In Narowal, a woman was allegedly strangled to death by her husband and mother-in-law just two days before giving birth to a daughter.
Ishrat Bibi, who married Imran Saleem, a businessman from Shakargarh’s Mohallah Rashid, over 14 years ago, frequently complained about her in-laws torturing and taunting her for having two daughters and only one son.
Ishrat Bibi’s brother, Zahid Ali Shakir, informed the Shakargarh city police that Saleem tortured his sister and taunted her for having daughters in conjunction with his mother, Rashida Bibi. Ishrat was pregnant, he added, and the lady doctor she was going consulting had already told her she was having a daughter.
Furthermore, he said that Saleem and his mother made his sister’s life a living hell by making derogatory remarks and strangling her to death only two days before her due date. He claims that the two forcibly aborted his sister’s pregnancy twice in the past in order to prevent the birth of a baby girl.
Ishrat’s body was taken into police custody and transported to the THQ hospital for an autopsy. The police filed a complaint against Saleem and Rashida Bibi, and after a post-mortem and other formalities, they handed over the body to the next of kin.
DSP Malik Mohammad Khalil of the Shakargarh Circle said police had filed a case and will proceed with the action after checking the charges.
