On Tuesday (26 October), Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi arrived in Iran for a cabinet meeting of Afghanistan’s close allies.

The meeting will take place on October 27 (Wednesday). At the meeting, Qureshi will offer Pakistan’s perspective on the current situation in Afghanistan.

The meeting will discuss Afghan issues along with the formation of an inclusive government which will be attended by the foreign ministers and political representatives of:

  • China
  • Tajikistan
  • Uzbekistan
  • Turkmenistan

The Foreign Ministers of China, Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan convened the first “Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on the Afghan Issue Among the Neighbouring Countries of Afghanistan” via video link on September 8 at Pakistan’s invitation.

The FM, speaking at the meeting, stated that recent events have pushed Afghanistan into the international spotlight.

He claimed that no one could have predicted the recent turn of events in Afghanistan, claiming that all earlier evaluations and forecasts were incorrect. Moreover, he said, “Despite the unexpected and unexpected nature of these developments, it is critical to highlight that the much-feared bloodbath has not materialized.”

The foreign ministers released a joint statement, stressing that with the removal of foreign soldiers from Afghanistan, the Afghan people must now determine their own destiny, which should allow for the implementation of an “Afghan-led, Afghan-owned” process for national peace and reconciliation.

They acknowledged that the changes in Afghanistan demonstrate that there is no military solution to the problem, and they emphasised the significance of an inclusive democratic framework in Afghanistan that includes all ethnic groups.
