On Sunday (22 August), while talking to a local news channel, The Deputy Director General (DDG) of the Water Management Department Sardar Khan Zimri stated that they have a desire to construct a small dam in the upper area of Simly Dam at Chinoyot which is located in the limitations of Punjab government. The chairman of the capital development authority has governed to commence the issue to the Punjab government.
Mr. Sardar Khan Zimri said that the dam feasibility report had been established in the eighties however subsequently no stride was taken in the establishment of the dam. He added that after the completion of the formalities, as per estimation it would take two years to complete the dam construction. He also said that the dam would help to add 20 million gallons daily (MGD) water to the system.
Capital Development Authority provides 60 million gallons daily (MGD) from three main sources – Khanpur Dam, Simly Dam, and tube-wells. The reason behind building a dam near Simly dam, Mr. Zimri said that the dam would help for retaining water during monsoon season.
He said that this dam would be used as a kind of feeder dam throughout rainy seasons as we open the sluiceways of Simly dam however after the completion of the small dam rather than wasting water we will be able to store water and manage the water shortage in the city.
The Chairman Capital Development Authority Amer Ali Ahmed conducted a meeting to discuss all water-related projects.
The members talked about the Ghazi Barotha project from which Islamabad and Rawalpindi will be able to get 100 million gallons daily (MGD) water but the project would take five years to get complete after it started. The Ghazi Barotha project needs more than Rs100 billion.
The Chairman Capital Development Authority directed that rather than looking towards the Ghazi Barotha project, The Capital Development Authority survey for small projects to add 30 million gallons daily (MGD) water to the system that would be more than enough to overcome the water shortage for next few years.
