Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain informed Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai that Pakistan will continue to support women’s education in Afghanistan.
According to Radio Pakistan, the information minister made the remarks during a telephonic discussion with Malala on Monday (16 August), as the situation in Afghanistan deteriorated, with the Taliban seizing power and President Ashraf Ghani fleeing to an unknown place.
The information minister told Malala that Pakistan also provides educational opportunities to Afghan refugee children, with over 6,000 Afghan youngsters enrolled in Pakistani schools.
Malala told Chaudhry about worldwide concerns about women’s rights in Afghanistan and suggested that Pakistan take a proactive role in supporting women’s education in the country. Further on, she said that she has also sent Prime Minister Imran Khan a letter in this regard.
Malala Yousafzai, the education activist, also expressed worry about the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan saying she was concerned about the situation in the country. Malala had said on Twitter, “I am deeply worried about women, minorities, and human rights advocates.”
Prime Minister Imran Khan stated that Afghanistan had freed the chains of slavery, referring to recent events in the neighboring country.
Slavery’s chains must be broken, according to the prime minister. The premier explained his aim by saying, “A slave mind can never achieve anything big.”
The Afghan Taliban’s spokesperson has declared the country’s conflict to be over and stated that the group wishes to have peaceful relations with the rest of the world.
