A three-member bench of the Supreme Court will hear a petition on Monday seeking to declare the February 8 general elections null and void.
Chief Justice of Pakistan, Qazi Faez Isa will preside over the bench that included Justices Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Mussarat Hilali.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the federal government were named as respondents in the petition filed by a citizen Ali Khan.
In the petition, he urged the court to order fresh elections within 30 days and underlined the need for judicial oversight to ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability.
Furthermore, the petition sought a stay order on the formation of the new government until the case was resolved.
The general elections on February 8 were marred by the massive allegations of rigging levled by by various political parties and losing candidates.
Protests against alleged rigging in the 2024 general elections have erupted in Balochistan, Sindh, and other parts of the country.
Political parties such as the National Party, PPP, JUI, BAP, BNP-Mengal, PkMAP, and PkNAP have staged demonstrations, blocking major thoroughfares and demanding recounts. Joint protest demonstrations and camps have been established to pressure the Election Commission to reconsider results.
The PTI has leveled serious allegations, claiming deprivation of National Assembly and provincial assembly seats. Balochistan and Sindh witnessed highway blockades, sit-ins, and strikes, with parties like the JUI and Jamaat-e-Islami protesting against alleged rigging.
According to the results, PTI-backed independent candidates secured 92 seats, PML-N obtained 75, and PPP won 54 seats.
