Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) have forged a crucial understanding on a constitutional amendment aimed at bolstering the local government system in the country.
The consensus on this pivotal matter was achieved during a high-profile meeting at the residence of PML-N Secretary General Chaudhry Ahsan Iqbal on Wednesday.
Leaders from both parties, including Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Khawaja Saad Rafique, and Bashir Memon from PML-N, and Farooq Sattar, Mustafa Kamal, and Aminul Haq from MQM, were instrumental in shaping this agreement.
Ahsan Iqbal disclosed to media after the meeting that the MQM delegation had presented a draft bill, and in response, the PML-N assured that a constitutional amendment would be endorsed by parliament post the general elections.
Expressing the PML-N’s commitment to a robust local government system, Ahsan emphasized the pivotal role of such a system in addressing grassroots issues and fostering the development of youth.
Furthermore, Ahsan Iqbal elaborated on discussions regarding collaborative efforts for the upcoming general elections. He outlined the joint strategy to support candidates with strong electoral prospects, particularly aiming to secure maximum seats in the Sindh province.
Mustafa Kamal clarified that their engagement with PML-N leadership was not centered on securing electoral seats but rather focused on fortifying the local government system. Echoing this sentiment, Farooq Sattar underscored the critical importance of a potent local government system in the prosperity and resolution of citizens’ concerns. He emphasized the need for provincial governments to decentralize power and share responsibilities with local bodies for more effective governance.
