PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Tuesday acknowledged that the PPP lacked the mandate to form a government in the federation.
Consequently, he declared that he would not be putting himself forward as a candidate for the prime minister of Pakistan, acknowledging that other parties, such as PML-N and independents, hold greater numbers in the Centre.
He was addressing a press conference in Islamabad after a two-day meeting of the Central Committee.
Bilawal emphasized that the PTI’s refusal to form a coalition with the PPP left PML-N as the sole party extending an invitation to join the government.
Despite concerns, he announced that the PPP has accepted the election results in the best interest of the country.
Bilawal urged all political parties to address shortcomings in the electoral process to ensure fairness and transparency.
He expressed the party’s commitment to utilizing available forums, such as the ECP and parliament, to address these issues.
During the PPP’s Central Executive Committee meeting, Bilawal revealed that concerns about a level playing field were raised with Asif Ali Zardari, who assured that these complaints would be addressed.
Although the PPP may not be part of the government, Bilawal pledged the party’s engagement with other political forces on matters related to votes and the election of the prime minister.
Bilawal criticized the PTI for decisions not favorable to democracy, particularly its refusal to engage in dialogue with other major parties. He highlighted the importance of a political force listening to others and criticized the damage caused when this doesn’t happen. Despite not being part of the government, Bilawal stated that the PPP would support political parties in key matters such as premiership, budget, and legislation, without becoming part of ministries or PDM 2.
Expressing concern over the country’s crisis, Bilawal advocated for his father, Asif Ali Zardari, to become the president. He emphasized Zardari’s capacity to navigate the current challenges facing the nation. Bilawal urged all political forces to prioritize the country’s well-being over self-interest, emphasizing the need to avoid divisive politics and prevent external forces from exploiting the crisis.
