Notice issued to Adiala Jail Superintendent for denying Imran Khan of phone call with sons

Imran Khan has been in jail due to cipher case

The Special Court established under the Official Secrets Act on Monday issued notices to the Adiala Jail superintendent for reportedly neglecting to facilitate a court-ordered phone call between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and his sons.

Despite the suspension of his sentence in the Toshakhana case, Imran Khan has been in jail due to his judicial remand in the cipher case. This case revolves around a missing diplomatic document purportedly containing a threat from the United States to oust Imran from power. Imran Khan and his aide Shah Mahmood Qureshi were indicted in this case on October 23.

Last week, the special court had granted Imran Khan permission to make a telephone call to his children every Saturday. However, in a recent petition filed by PTI lawyer Sheraz Ahmed Ranjha, it was alleged that the Adiala jail superintendent had deliberately disregarded the court’s order.

“The respondent has wilfully, deliberately, and intentionally violated the order of the honourable court,” the plea stated, demanding that contempt of court proceedings be initiated against the prison official. The application also urgently requested the superintendent to facilitate an immediate phone call between Imran Khan and his sons.

Addressing the issue, Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain took up the petition today, issuing notices to the Adiala jail superintendent and requesting responses to the allegations.

The hearing has been adjourned until November 8.
