PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari Friday underlined the need for holding early election while adhering to the constitutional limit of 90 days.
Talking to media in Karachi, Bilawal highlighted the pressing issues faced by the country that included inflation, unemployment, and poverty.
He underscored the PPP’s stance, stating that they view these issues as their primary adversaries rather than political rivals.
Bilawal expressed his party’s eagerness for early elections, emphasizing that they should be held within the constitutional timeframe of 90 days.
He believed that by doing so, the PPP can secure victory and effectively address the economic challenges facing the nation.
Regarding recent comments made by Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) emir Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who accused the PPP of reneging on promises related to early elections, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari refrained from delving into the details but acknowledged Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s status as a senior politician.
He pointed out a divergence in interpretation between the PPP, the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) regarding the Constitution.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has previously ruled out elections for this year, and the 90-day limit for holding polls following the dissolution of the National Assembly ends on November 9.
The ECP’s decision to postpone elections beyond November 9 is based on the notification of results from the new digital 2023 census and Section 17(2) of the Elections Act, which mandates constituency delimitation after each census.
