Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has been summoned by the Islamabad Police to the Police Lines Headquarters on May 10 and 11 to record his statement in relation to four terrorism cases.
The cases are related to unrest that occurred outside the Federal Judicial Complex (FJC) and the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
The notices issued by police stated that Imran Khan must appear on May 10 at 2pm to record his statement for two cases, and on May 11 at 2pm for the other two cases. The notices caution that appropriate legal action will be taken if Imran fails to attend.
After Imran Khan’s appearance at the Federal Judicial Complex on February 28, two terrorism cases were registered against him at Islamabad’s Ramna police station. One case alleged that Imran had led a mob to the FJC, while the other accused him of doing the same at the IHC.
In addition, after Imran’s appearance at the FJC on March 18, during which police and PTI workers had clashed, he was booked in two more terrorism cases. One was filed by the Counter-Terrorism Department’s police station and the other by the Golra police station, accusing Imran of attacking police and causing unrest outside the court.
On March 23, a joint investigation team (JIT) was formed to conduct a quick investigation into the terrorism cases registered against Imran Khan and other “miscreants” in relation to the incidents described above.
A Joint Investigation Team (JIT) was established on the directive of Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah to investigate cases related to the alleged involvement of PTI chief Imran Khan in four cases of terrorism outside the Federal Judicial Complex and Islamabad High Court.
The JIT was given 14 days to complete the investigation and submit a charge sheet before the courts. The team was headed by Additional Inspector General of Special Branch (Punjab) Zulfiqar Hameed, and members included officials from the Inter-Services Intelligence, Military Intelligence, and the Intelligence Bureau.
On April 20, the Lahore High Court stated that the investigation should not be suspended but that the JIT’s proceedings would be subject to the decision on the PTI’s petitions challenging the JIT.
A verdict on the petitions was reserved on Friday. During the hearing, Punjab Additional Advocate General Ghulam Sarwar Nehang stated that the JIT formed by the government in at least ten cases against the PTI leadership and workers could not be prevented from doing its job.
