If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power: Halsey’s new album

Halsey, two-times Grammy nominee and multiple awards holder, released her fourth album on 27th August, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power, which has made an epic statement with its dark and powerful graphics along with a total of 13 dynamic and fierce songs; it is trending at #1 on Spotify already, while Shazam declared Halsey the Artist of the Week.

Halsey, who gave birth to her first child about a month ago, stated in a recent interview that the album circulated around “the joys and horrors of pregnancy and childbirth,” but not in the typical sense; she said that there was a constant pressure on every pregnant woman to portray herself as a “girly-girly fertility goddess”, however, she stated that her pregnancy journey had altered her perception of genders completely. While her album did centralize around pregnancy, it did so in an atypical and unconventional manner, embracing the demons that came along with the delights.

Speaking about her album, she said that it wasn’t a girl power album, despite the song titles such as, ‘Girl is a Gun’ and ‘I am not a woman, I’m a god.

Everyone’s like, ‘Oh, it’s like this is a girl album,’ and I’m like, ‘No, it’s not,’” she said. “Being pregnant, writing this album, people are expecting girlishness, you know what I mean?

She further stated, “I think it probably can be experienced in that way, for some people, because of the fact that I made it at all and the way I made it is kind of like a girl-power statement. But the record itself, I guess, it’s not that…”

Alongside her music album, Halsey released an R-rated film as well under the same name; created in a Games of Throne-style, filled with dark and explicit content, the film is grossing a great $735K worldwide from certain selected locations and limited showtimes around the globe, while maintaining a 9.1/10 IMDb rating.

In one evening, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power posted a $5K screen average from 100 Imax auditoriums across both the U.S. and Canada. Sellouts were seen across several different countries around the world, including Russia, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and the UK. London’s BFI hosted two shows at full capacity for the first time since December 2019. The film took the world by storm and further added to Halsey’s album’s success.

Fellow artists have been complimenting Halsey’s album; Fletcher called it a “visual and sonic masterpiece” while Gracie Abrams said, “I am permanently inspired by everything you do and say and touch.”

Fellow artist Taylor Swift stated, “I am blown away by Halsey’s artistry and commitment to taking risks. Giving us all a brave new era to dive into and explore together.
