A first look at Pablo Larraín’s Princess Diana documentary ‘Spencer’ gets played at CinemaCon on Wednesday, along with the poster release for a public reckoning. In the poster, Stewart has her back turned and she is collapsed in a pose, with her head tucked between her hands and possibly crying into an exquisite off-white dress with a huge skirt that not only looks like a brides’ dress but also looks like dusty sand ready to swallow her whole.
The footage played at CinemaCon, which is obscured from public viewing at the moment is the continuation of an argument between Stewart and Farthing, which presumably starts at one of their sons shooting with the family. The ensuing discussion covers a plethora of issues the couple has with each other, such as wandering the grounds alone, the way she unties curtains, and probable infidelities are hinted at. Yet, the core of all their troubles seems to be Diana’s lack of willingness to conform to the royal standards.
“There’s two of everyone,” he says to her in the scene, as per EW. “We are given tasks, you have to be able to make your body do things you hate.”
She replies back, “That you hate?”
“Yes,” says Charles, “for the good of the country. For the people, because they don’t want us to be people. That’s how it is. I’m sorry I thought you knew.”
The film itself follows a three-day weekend in December 1991, when Diana had joined the British royal family for a Christmas at Sandringham Estate and had decided to end her failing marriage.
Sneak peeks of the movie shows a completely immersed Stewart into her character as Diana. When asked about her character, Stewart says “Spencer is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life, It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name; Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her.”
The Spencer cast is packed with stars, as Jack Farthing plays Prince Charles, as well as the probable presence of Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall, and Sean Harris. The film is also written by the esteemed Steven Knight, the author of Peaky Blinders.
Spencer will hit theaters the year on November 5.
