Torrential rains wreak havoc in flood-stricken Gwadar, Balochistan

Met office issues warning regarding flash floods

Gwadar and various regions of Balochistan were pounded by relentless rains on Sunday, throwing daily life and traffic into disarray.

The downpour resulted in main roads and streets in Gwadar being submerged in knee-high water, exacerbating the already challenging flood situation in the area.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Gwadar recorded 21 millimeters of rain, Turbat 10mm, and 2mm in Ormara, Turbat, and Jiwani over the last 24 hours.

The Met Office anticipated ongoing rain, thunderstorms, and isolated showers in several districts including Turbat, Kech, Gwadar, Jiwani, Pasni, Ormara, Panjgur, Kharan, Kalat, Khuzdar, Lasbela, and Awaran today.

Moreover, it issued a caution regarding flash flooding in local nullahs (streams) of Gwadar, Kech, Turbat, and Panjgur. Snowfall, posing potential disruptions to traffic, is predicted in northern Balochistan until March 13.

Further forecasts indicate similar weather patterns with snowfall on hills in Chagai, Noshki, Washuk, Mastung, Sibbi, Nasirabad, Zhob, Sherani, Barkhan, Musakhel, Kohlu, Jhal Magsi, Loralai, Ziarat, Quetta, Chaman, Pishin, Kila Abdullah, and Kila Saifullah until the aforementioned date.

Responding to the situation, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued a high alert in Balochistan.

In a separate development, light rain graced several parts of Karachi earlier in the day.

The PDMA highlighted a prevailing westerly wave over Balochistan and adjoining Sindh, projecting rain, wind, and thunderstorms in multiple districts, including Jamshoro, Dadu, Larkano, Kambar Shahdadkot, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Sukkur, Ghotki, Naushahro Feroze, and Shaheed Benazirabad until March 13.

Furthermore, Karachi Division is expected to experience mainly cloudy and windy weather, with occasional drizzle or light rain today. In response to these forecasts, the PDMA emphasized precautionary measures, including the availability of dewatering machines, coordination with emergency services, establishment of helpline numbers, and ensuring uninterrupted power supply for hospitals.
