India to face Australia in U19 WC final as Pakistan chokes in semi final

Australia beat Pakistan with one wicket

Australia clinched a nail-biting one-wicket victory with just five balls to spare in the Under-19 World Cup semi-final against Pakistan at Willowmoore Park on Thursday.

Their triumph sets up a final clash against India at the same venue on Sunday.

Tom Straker spearheaded Australia’s formidable fast bowling attack, claiming six wickets for 24 runs as Pakistan was dismissed for 179 after opting to bat first.

Despite noteworthy contributions of 50 by Harry Dixon and 49 by Oliver Peake, Australia faced the prospect of defeat when they lost their ninth wicket with 16 runs still required.

The duo of Raf MacMillan and last man Callum Vidler orchestrated a stunning comeback for Australia. MacMillan sealed the win with an inside edge that raced to the fine-leg boundary for a crucial four runs.

Pakistan fought back admirably, with left-arm spinner Arafat Minhas (2-20) and fast bowler Ali Raza (4-34) leading the charge. Minhas also impressed with the bat, alongside Azan Awais, as both notched up half-centuries, propelling Pakistan to a total that nearly proved defendable.

The towering Straker played a pivotal role with aggressive short-pitched bowling on a pitch offering pace and bounce. “We talked before the game about giving them nothing to drive,” said Straker, who delivered the best bowling figures in any Under-19 World Cup semi-final or final.

Australia’s victory sets the stage for a highly anticipated final against India, with both teams having won multiple Under-19 World Cup titles. They have previously faced off in two finals, in 2012 and 2018, with India emerging victorious on both occasions.
