Former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi faced indictment on Tuesday in the Toshakhana case.
The couple was indicted by the accountability court during a hearing held in Adiala Jail, where the ex-prime minister is currently serving his sentence.
A comprehensive evaluation of the case was conducted by a five-member special prosecution team from the anti-graft watchdog.
Accountability court Judge Muhammad Bashir presided over the hearing on both the Toshakhana and £190 million cases within the prison premises.
The court had previously postponed the indictment of the former prime minister and his wife when the latter failed to appear.
In today’s hearing, NAB prosecutor Muzaffar Abbasi and his team were present, while Imran Khan was represented by his legal counsel, including Latif Khosa and Umair Niazi.
Additionally, Bushra Bibi was furnished with a copy of the £190 million case during the proceedings.
Meanwhile, Imran Khan has mounted a challenge against his disqualification in the Toshakhana case.
A larger bench, comprising five members and headed by Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan, is set to address the petitions on January 12 (Friday).
The bench includes Justice Shams Mehmood, Justice Shahid Karim, Justice Shehram Sarwar Chaudhry, and Justice Jawad Hassan.
The Toshakhana case revolves around the alleged misuse of the Persian-term “treasure house,” where government officials are permitted to retain gifts of low value. However, extravagant items necessitate a significantly reduced fee payment to the government.
Imran Khan, a 70-year-old former cricketer turned politician, is accused of exploiting his premiership from 2018 to 2022 by purchasing and selling gifts received during foreign visits.
Government officials claim that Khan’s aides sold the gifts, prompting allegations of misusing his position.
The Election Commission’s order cited Article 63(1)(p) of the Constitution, leading to Imran Khan’s disqualification.
