The United States (US) on Thursday (28 October) unveiled a new humanitarian aid package worth $144 million for the people of war-torn Afghanistan.
National Security Council (NSC) spokesperson Emily Horne said in a statement that “The United States is providing nearly $144 million in new humanitarian assistance to the people affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.”
Furthermore, she added that “This brings total US humanitarian aid in Afghanistan and for Afghan refugees in the region to nearly $474 million in 2021, the largest amount of assistance from any nation.”
Moreover, the spokesperson said that the aid will be delivered through independent humanitarian groups that give direct assistance to more than 18.4 million needy Afghans in the region, including Afghan refugees in neighboring countries.
In addition, she pointed out, “Our partners provide lifesaving protection, shelter, livelihoods support, essential health care, winterization assistance, emergency food aid, water, sanitation, and hygiene services in response to the growing humanitarian needs exacerbated by healthcare shortages, drought, malnutrition, and the impending winter.”
Prior to the arrival of winter in the war-torn country, UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged the international community to donate as much as possible to the destitute people of Afghanistan.
In a post titled ‘Afghanistan on the verge of catastrophe without immediate humanitarian aid,’ the UN’s current chief urged the international community to assist the UN in delivering life-saving aid and pre-positioning supplies ahead of winter.
