Australia roars back to life with convincing victory over SL

SL's defeat dampens its hopes for top 4 finalists

Australia breathed life into their faltering ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup campaign with a commanding five-wicket win over Sri Lanka in Lucknow on Monday. Having suffered defeat in their first two matches, the five-time World Cup champions showcased significant improvement as they chased down Sri Lanka’s total of 209 with over 14 overs to spare.
Sri Lanka seemed to put a big total on score board as openers Kusal Perera (78) and Pathum Nissanka (61) compiled a strong 125-run partnership for the first wicket. However, inspired bowling performances from Adam Zampa (4/25), Mitchell Starc (2/43), and Pat Cummins (2/32), coupled with impressive catches in the field, curtailed Sri Lanka’s momentum in the latter stages of their innings.
The early jolts in Australia’s chase, caused by pacer Dilshan Madushanka (3/38) removing David Warner and Steve Smith, were swiftly countered by Mitchell Marsh’s aggressive batting. Marsh’s explosive start saw him reach his fifty in just 39 balls, setting the stage for a resolute Australian fightback.
Although Sri Lanka managed to dismiss Marsh for 52 in the 15th over, Josh Inglis (58) and Marnus Labuschagne (40) stabilized the innings with a steady 77-run partnership.
With Labuschagne’s departure, Glenn Maxwell’s blazing form took center stage, propelling Australia closer to victory. Maxwell’s unbeaten 31, coupled with his attacking style, ensured Australia’s smooth sail to their first win in the tournament.
Sri Lanka, once commanding with their openers, faltered in the face of Australia’s disciplined bowling and sharp fielding. Kusal Perera’s departure marked a turning point, and despite his aggressive 61, Sri Lanka found themselves unable to set a challenging target.
Australia, currently positioned eighth on the World Cup standings, showcased resilience and determination. The win places them back in contention, while Sri Lanka finds themselves in a challenging position, still seeking their first victory in the tournament.
This victory not only boosts Australia’s confidence but also reaffirms their status as a strong contender in the competition. Australia’s resurgence catapults them back into the category of four finalists of the world cup.
