The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has issued notices to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), retired Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, and Faiz Hameed, along with prominent journalists Javed Chaudhry and Shahid Maitla, as well as media regulatory authorities PEMRA and the Press Association of Pakistan.
The notices were issued in response to a petition filed by a concerned citizen, Atif Ali, alleging the violation of legal bindings and misinterpretation of facts by the above mentioned individuals.
Atif Ali’s petition specifically sought the registration of a case in the FIA against Gen Qamar Bajwa, Faiz Hameed, and others, accusing them of flouting legal obligations after retirement and misinterpreting various events.
According to the petitioner, two articles were published solely for the purpose of increasing viewership, which had a detrimental impact on society.
The petitioner expressed shock at the content of these articles, which portrayed a negative image and alleged the existence of a corrupt influence within society.
The petitioner argued that these articles, published under the guise of journalism and freedom of expression, had maliciously misinterpreted events, thereby tarnishing the reputation of institutions and creating mistrust between the public and these organizations.
In response to these claims, the petitioner pleaded with the court to direct the Director General of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to register a First Information Report (FIR) against the individuals involved.
