Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan was summoned by a district and sessions court in Islamabad to appear on September 25 in a case related to his alleged “unIslamic nikah” (marriage) with his third wife, Bushra Bibi.
Civil judge Qudratullah has issued a summons to the Attock jail superintendent to ensure Imran Khan’s presence in court.
This legal dispute traces back to May of this year when a district and sessions court in Islamabad rejected a plea challenging Imran Khan’s nikah with Bushra Bibi.
The court deemed the application “inadmissible” and beyond its jurisdiction. However, in July, another Islamabad court overturned the civil court’s decision.
The petitioner, Muhammad Hanif, had argued that Bushra Bibi was divorced by her former husband in November 2017 and married Imran Khan on January 1, 2018, while her Iddat period (the isolation period for a woman after divorce or the death of her husband) had not ended.
He contended that this action was against Islamic Sharia and Muslim norms.
The complainant presented statements from Mufti Muhammad Saeed, who conducted Imran and Bushra’s marriage, and Awn Chaudhry, a close friend of Imran Khan and one of the witnesses at the wedding.
Mufti Muhammad Saeed stated that he had solemnized the nikah on January 1, 2018, despite knowing that Bushra Bibi was still in her Iddat period, based on assurances from a woman claiming to be the former first lady’s sister.
In addition to this legal matter, Imran Khan is currently facing other legal challenges. He was arrested in August on charges related to misusing his premiership from 2018 to 2022 to buy and sell gifts received during foreign visits, amounting to over Rs140 million ($635,000). Although the Islamabad High Court overturned a lower court’s decision to jail him, he remains incarcerated due to his involvement in the cipher case.
