Sri Lanka earns thrilling victory to secure spot in Asia Cup Final

SL to face India in final on Sept 17

In a nail-biting super 4 round knock out match of the Asia Cup, the Sri Lankan cricket team clinched a dramatic two-wicket victory over Pakistan, booking their ticket to the tournament’s final showdown with India on September 17.
The match, which unfolded at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, showcased Sri Lanka’s grit and determination as they successfully chased down Pakistan’s target of 253 runs.
Despite losing two early wickets, Sri Lankan batsmen Sadeera Samarawickrama and Kusal Mendis exhibited remarkable resilience under immense pressure. Their partnership of over 80 runs was a game-changer, instilling hope in the Sri Lankan camp that they could reach the final on their home turf.
Pakistan, batting first after winning the toss, faced early setbacks as their openers struggled to find their footing against the Sri Lankan bowlers. Fakhar Zaman’s early dismissal put pressure on the team, but Abdullah Shafique and skipper Babar Azam steadied the ship with a partnership marked by cautious shot selection. However, Shafique’s departure for a well-fought 52 dealt a blow to Pakistan’s hopes.
The Sri Lankan bowlers, especially Wellalage and Pathirana, bowled with precision and picked up crucial wickets at regular intervals. Despite some resistance from Pakistan’s middle order, they couldn’t establish substantial partnerships, ultimately posting a total of 252 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 42 overs.
Sri Lanka’s pursuit of the target got off to a positive start, with Kusal Perera and Nissanka displaying aggressive intent and scoring quick runs. However, Perera’s dismissal for 17 runs via a run-out added a twist to the contest. Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama then took control, forming a solid partnership characterized by well-placed singles and timely boundaries.
Pakistan’s bowlers had their moments, with Iftikhar Ahmed and Shaheen Afridi taking crucial wickets in the final overs. But it was Kusal Mendis who stood tall, reaching a well-deserved half-century and guiding Sri Lanka through the chase. Asalanka and Shanaka also made valuable contributions to the cause.
As the match entered a thrilling phase, Sri Lanka reached 210 for the loss of three wickets after 35 overs. However, Iftikhar Ahmed struck twice in quick succession, setting up a tense climax. In the second last over, Shaheen Afridi grabbed two vital wickets, leaving only eight runs required in the final over. Zaman Khan was entrusted with the responsibility of defending the target, but it was Charith Asalanka who ultimately prevailed, securing a memorable victory for Sri Lanka and a spot in the Asia Cup final.
