The major party in alliance—Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on Monday rejected reports circulating in some section of media regarding its consensus with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on the name of caretaker prime minister.
In a press conference,Sherry Rehman, a prominent leader of PPP and Climate Minister, referred to these reports as “fake news” and emphasized that no such decision had been made by the party.
Flanked by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, Faisal Karim Kundi, Rehman stated, “No name [for the caretaker PM] has been shared with us … and neither has PPP made any decision regarding this.”
She further asserted that the party had not even discussed or proposed any names for the position.
The confusion arose from conflicting reports that emerged yesterday, suggesting that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership was considering Finance Minister Ishaq Dar as the interim prime minister.
Regarding this, Ms Rehman clarified that the PPP’s party position aligned with democratic principles enshrined in the Constitution, favoring a non-partisan caretaker government.
Rehman shed light on the consultative process involved in choosing the caretaker PM, emphasizing that it required discussions among multiple parties and the opposition leader.
She neither confirmed nor denied reports of the PPP expressing reservations about Ishaq Dar’s potential selection but stressed that the party had not ruled out any candidate either.
The political landscape in Pakistan continues to evolve in backdrop to the general elections and the matter of the caretaker prime minister remains subject to ongoing deliberations and negotiations among various parties.
The public and the media keenly await further updates on this crucial matter in the country’s democratic process.
Meanwhile, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb clarified that the caretaker prime minister would be appointed in accordance with the Constitution.
According to the Constitution, the prime minister and opposition leader would complete the process for caretaker prime minister after consultation.
