The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has issued a stern warning to the creators of the popular television drama series ‘Tere Bin’ for airing “inappropriate content” in one of its recent episodes.
The regulatory body expressed concerns over the content featured in episode 47 of the drama, which depicted a potentially controversial scene involving the leading characters, Meerab (played by Yumna Zaidi) and Murtasim (played by Wahaj Ali).
In the episode, preceding the controversial scene, Meerab is shown slapping and spitting at Murtasim’s face during an argument. This was followed by Murtasim pushing Meerab onto a bed and closing the door, strongly implying a potential act of marital rape or assault in the subsequent episode. However, it was revealed later that the act was consensual, although both characters felt guilty for their actions.
PEMRA’s notice cited that such content depicted in the drama violates PEMRA’s own rules and the Electronic Media Regulatory Rules of 2015. These rules explicitly direct channels to refrain from airing television dramas containing “indecent content.”
PEMRA emphasized its primary focus on upholding cultural, religious, and ethical sensitivities in television content. While acknowledging the importance of artistic freedom and creative expression, the regulatory body underscored the significance of responsible storytelling that aligns with societal values.
The media regulatory body stated in 2019, “Such content is not only distressing for viewers but is also against the commonly accepted standards of decency.”
In light of the objectionable material aired in ‘Tere Bin,’ PEMRA’s recent notice has urged Geo Entertainment and the creators of the drama to promptly remove the controversial content and cautioned them against any future occurrences. Failure to comply with the directive may result in punitive action taken by the regulatory body against the creators.
