Country’s survival depends on holding May 9 arsonists accountable: PM Shehbaz

PM addresses National Assembly

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addressed the National Assembly on Monday insisting on holding the perpetrators of May 9 arson and vandalism accountability.
He also expressed his deep concern over the arsons that took place on May 9, which involved the desecration of martyrs’ monuments and the damaging of military installations.
The PM stressed the importance of not showing any leniency towards the perpetrators, as he believed the country’s survival depended on holding them accountable under the law.
He stated that the nation would never forget this heart-rending incident, and while there was no personal vendetta involved and the justice must be served.
Acknowledging the ordeals faced by coalition parties, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif deemed the May 9 incident as particularly intolerable.
He assured the nation that their trust would be restored.
Expressing gratitude to the House for passing a resolution condemning the riots, the PM clarified that cases related to attacks on civilian infrastructure would be tried under anti-terrorism laws. Cases involving military installations would be heard in military courts, emphasizing that no special laws were being introduced for this purpose.
The Prime Minister dismissed PTI chief Imran Khan’s claim, in response to a tweet, that he had replaced a senior military officer after being informed about his wife Bushra Bibi’s involvement in corruption.
He called Imran Khan’s statement a blatant lie and reiterated his personal knowledge of the matter.
Shehbaz Sharif described the arsons that followed Imran Khan’s arrest in a NAB case involving Rs60 billion corruption as a heartbreaking incident that the nation had never experienced.
Referring to the Al Qadir Trust case, the Prime Minister revealed that Rs60 billion was meant to be transferred to the national treasury, but the matter had been secretly approved by the previous federal cabinet.
He criticized Imran Khan for undermining Pakistan’s relations with the United States by alleging a conspiracy for regime change, and he accused Imran Khan of seeking help from America now.
