China launches first-ever commercial 5G inter-network roaming

Trial to take place in the Xinjiang

China has announced launch world’s first commercial 5G inter-network roaming service trial which will eventually allow users to utilize devices that support 5G roaming without the need to change their SIM card or phone number.
The announcement was made at the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) conference in Hefei, China.
The event, held on May 17, focused on the theme of “empowering the least developed countries through information and communication technologies.”
China’s trial of the commercial 5G inter-network roaming service will initially take place in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. This service will enable users to access 5G services provided by other operators when they are outside the coverage area of their own operators’ 5G networks.
With 5G roaming services available in certain areas, users will be able to utilize devices that support 5G roaming without the need to change their SIM card or phone number. They can directly access the 5G roaming service without incurring additional fees.
During the conference, Zhang Yunming, the Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology, outlined China’s plans for the future, including the promotion of 5G and industrial internet on a large scale. Zhang also mentioned the country’s vision for upcoming industries such as 6G, quantum information, and brain-like intelligence.

He emphasized that the next generation of information and communication technologies has become a vital driver for China’s high-quality development.
Furthermore, Zhang expressed the intention to deepen the integration of 5G and the industrial internet, supporting the growth of high-end, intelligent, and environmentally friendly manufacturing industries.
