In a significant development, the National Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on Monday, expressing deep concern and strong disapproval of recent acts of vandalism and arson following the arrest of Imran Khan on May 9.
Wajiha Qamar took the initiative to present the resolution in the House, conveying profound remorse for the loss of lives, injuries, and damage inflicted upon both public and private properties as a result of the vandalism incidents.
The resolution acknowledged and praised the invaluable contributions of the armed forces and security agencies, particularly the Ranger and Police, in safeguarding public order, upholding national sovereignty, and ensuring the safety and security of citizens.
It reiterated the utmost importance of upholding the rule of law, protecting human rights, and preserving fundamental freedoms such as peaceful assembly and expression, which are enshrined in the Constitution.
Furthermore, the resolution strongly denounced the acts of vandalism, destruction, and arson that occurred across Pakistan following the apprehension of Imran Khan Niazi, a suspect in the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) case.
The House also expressed its condemnation of the acts of fascism witnessed in the country, specifically mentioning the burning of Jinnah House, the official residence of the Lahore Corps Commander, where valuable items belonging to the Founding Father, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, were destroyed.
Moreover, the National Assembly strongly condemned the violent attacks on various sites, including the General Headquarters (GHQ), memorials honoring martyrs, historic buildings, mosques, and schools, all of which suffered significant damage due to the arson.
Recognizing the critical significance of maintaining an independent and impartial judiciary to uphold the rule of law and ensure justice, the resolution underscored the need for the judiciary to function without any bias or favoritism, thereby preserving the trust and confidence of the public.
It expressed concern over the Supreme Court’s perceived bias in its decisions, which has resulted in the erosion of its credibility and impartiality, particularly in cases where it appears to favor one political party over another.
The House emphasized the importance of addressing these concerns and ensuring that the judiciary maintains its integrity and impartiality, as these factors are vital for the fair and just functioning of the judicial system.
