Rash and reckless driving is a common sight on small and major avenues at Iftar time. Everybody wants to reach home in time and in the process, they opt to fast driving which sometime results into fatal accidents.
“Normally, this sort of behavior 1,” said a psychologist from Islamabad Mirha Sultan during an exclusive chat with this scribe.
She said there was no doubt that the body of a fasting person underwent significant changes due to lack of food and nutrition, but impatience among drivers just before sunset have everything to do with their psychology.
Basically, there was a misconception among the Muslims that their fast may not be accepted by the Almighty if it was not opened at exact time, she said, adding “this is the key factor which drives the motorists to drive fast so that they could reach home in time.”
She said people needed to understand that saving life of a person was more important than any good deed in the world and while driving, all of the Muslims must care about others who may lose life just due their minor mistake.
A traffic police sergeant, requesting anonymity, said accidents due to rash driving were not actually accidents rather they were more of crashes. During Ramazan, reports of accidents witnessed significant increase and that was just due to impatience among the motorists just before sunset.
Responsible and sensible motorists also condemned such behavior and called upon the traffic police to launch aggressive sensitization campaign on the issue especially by engaging the religious scholars.
Arham Butt, while talking to this scribe, said the issues was being ignored for decades and the traffic police needed to take the lead from front and sensitize the motorists against rash driving.
