PTI fears repeat of 1997; seeks people’s support to save rule of law, democracy

Pakistan descends into political, economic & constitutional crisis

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has feared retelecast of 1997 when an unruly mob of several thousand stormed the Supreme Court, forcing the then Chief Justice of Pakistan to adjourn a contempt of court case against the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
PTI Chairman Imran Khan took to twitter on Friday and wrote that the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz was threatening the top judge again in a way that it attack the court in 1997.
“As PMLN did in 1997 by storming SC to attack CJ Sajjad Ali Shah hearing a contempt petition against Nawaz Sharif, today PMLN is again threatening SC & CJP because they are petrified of elections,” he said in a series of tweets.

He asked the people to be ready to protest if it was required to save the rule of law, constitution and democracy.
“I want ppl [people] of Pak to be ready to come out in streets if need be to save Rule of Law, the Constitution & democracy. We will be talking to all those pol[itical] parties who are prepared to stand up against this conspiracy,” the PTI chief said.

Talking to the reporters, PTI Senior Leader Chaudhary Fawad Hussain said undoubtedly, efforts were underway to repeat “drama of 1997” in the apex court. Tarar family was on the forefront this time as it was in 1997.
He said the PML-N weakened the apex court in 1997 and this time it was not different as the whole nation had witnessed how they had tried to dilute powers of the CJP. History will judge who stands by the Constitution.
Fawad said the country had been descended into economic, political and constitutional crisis. If the election was not held in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa then there was no guarantee that the country would have polls in the next ten to eleven years.
