The Fate Of The Indian Team In The T20 World Cup

The T20 World cup matches are going on and the Indian Team has stayed successful in losing the 2 matches it played against Pakistan and New Zealand. Now the big question comes into the minds of everyone if the Indian team will stay to play the T20 World cup or not.

The present T20 World Cup encounter between India and New Zealand in Dubai finished in yet another lopsided game, with Team India losing by 8 wickets, maintaining their winless record against the Kiwis in the T20 World Cup fixtures. This is India’s third loss in as many T20 World Cup meetings against New Zealand.

Due to the slow nature of the Dubai surface with wickets falling at regular intervals, the Indian innings could not get going at the rate they would have desired in a T20 encounter.

Ish Sodhi, a Kiwi leg spinner, also remarked that the pitch was slower and that bowling slowly was the key to success. He finished with statistics of 4-0-17-2, with the valuable wickets of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in his haul.

Is India Out of the T20 World Cup?

India and New Zealand, both suffered heavy defeats against Pakistan in their opening matches. India, to stay in the world cup needs to:

  • Win their remaining 3 matches against Afghanistan, Scotland, and Namibia.
  • Hope Afghanistan beat New Zealand and end up with a run rate worse than India.

Afghanistan’s team

With the aggressive kind of cricket, Afghanistan has played thus far, dismissing them is a risky proposition. Despite common wisdom, the Afghans have decided to bat first twice in the tournament when teams usually choose to field first after winning the toss. This is not a remark about their strategy but rather about their optimistic attitude toward their strengths and shortcomings, as well as their self-confidence.

The Afghans thrashed Namibia by 62 runs after electing to bat first and did themselves a great favor with a run rate of +3.097, which is the highest in Group 2.

Thus, for India to qualify, they must hope that Afghanistan defeats New Zealand and that they defeat them first on November 3, the day of their next match.
