The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has made a passionate call on Monday for release of the “sensitive and crucial” European Union (EU) report on the February 8 elections, urging its public disclosure.
Addressing media representatives in Islamabad, PTI spokesperson Raoof Hasan emphasized the importance of making the EU’s report on the elections accessible to the public.
Hasan highlighted that the EU had reportedly submitted its findings on the country’s general elections to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The PTI’s insistence on the release of the EU report follows repeated allegations of widespread rigging and manipulation of election results during last month’s polls, with the party claiming that its mandate was unlawfully compromised.
Notably, PTI’s founder, Imran Khan, took the issue to international platforms, including writing to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), urging the organization to conduct an audit of the election results before considering any new financial assistance for Islamabad. However, the IMF declined to intervene, citing its limited mandate focused solely on economic matters.
It’s worth mentioning that immediately after the February 8 polls, Peter Stano, the EU’s Lead Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, expressed dismay over the electoral process’s lack of fairness. Stano pointed out various issues, including restrictions on political participation, limitations on freedom of expression, and allegations of interference in the electoral process.
Stano’s statement resonated with concerns voiced by other international actors, including the United States and the United Kingdom, both of which raised apprehensions about the constrained electoral environment and reported irregularities during the polling process.
