The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced on Monday that elections for 48 Senate seats would take place on April 2 following vacation of 52 seats in the upper house with the expiration of the six-year term of the incumbent Senators on Tuesday.
Notably, the elections will be held for 48 senators, as four reserved seats for the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) were abolished following the 25th Constitutional amendment.
The official schedule for the elections will be released on March 14, as per the ECP.
The polling will encompass the election of members for seven general seats, two women, two technocrats (including Ulema), and one seat for non-Muslims from Sindh and Punjab.
Additionally, lawmakers from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan will participate in electing members against seven general seats, two women, and two technocrat seats (including Ulema).
The National Assembly members will contribute to the election by choosing one general seat and one technocrat seat (including Ulema) from the federal capital.
The ECP appointed returning officers (ROs) in Islamabad and the four provinces to oversee the Senate election, with ECP Director General Training Saeed Gul serving as the RO in the federal capital. Provincial election commissioners Aijaz Anwar Chohan, Sharifullah, Shamshad Khan, and Muhammad Farid Afridi have been designated as ROs in Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan, respectively.
