Siraj resigns as JI chief following humiliating defeat in elections

JI failed to secure a single seat

Siraj-ul-Haq, the former Ameer (chief) of Jamaat-e-Islami, tendered his resignation on Monday, following the party’s dismal performance in the 2024 elections.

JI failed to secure any seats in the National Assembly, managing only two seats in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly.

In a statement, Siraj-ul-Haq acknowledged the defeat and expressed his decision to step down, citing his inability to lead the party to success despite dedicated hard work and efforts.

He shared the news via a post on X while confirming the development.

Siraj-ul-Haq assumed the role of JI Ameer in 2014, succeeding the outgoing chief Syed Munawar Hassan. At the time, he secured a majority of votes in the elections held at JI Headquarters Mansoora, where 25,533 out of 31,311 office-bearers participated in the voting process.

After successfully leading the party for a tenure of five years, Siraj-ul-Haq was re-elected in 2019. However, after a decade of dedicated service to Jamaat-e-Islami, he decided to resign from his position in light of the party’s recent electoral setbacks.

The 2024 elections marked a significant downturn for JI, prompting Siraj-ul-Haq to take responsibility for the outcome and step down as the party’s leader.

Meanwhile, JI Karachi chief Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rahman has announced to forfeit his PS-129 Sindh Assembly seat in favour of the PTI-backed candidate.

Naeem had won from PS-129 Karachi Central VIII with 26,296 votes while PTI-backed independent candidate Saif Bari secured 11,357 votes.
