Caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab Mohsin Naqvi elected elected unopposed as the new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the next three years on Tuesday.
The official announcement was made by PCB’s Chief Election Commissioner, Shah Khawar, during a press conference in Lahore on Monday.
Naqvi, the owner of a media channel, will be the 37th chairman of the cricket board, succeeding Zaka Ashraf in the Board of Governors (BoG).
Despite concurrently holding the position of chief minister, Khawar clarified that there are no legal restrictions preventing Naqvi from assuming the role of PCB chairman immediately.
Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar nominated Naqvi for the PCB’s BoG.
Naqvi expressed his commitment to addressing the issues affecting Pakistan cricket, emphasizing the need for necessary reforms.
In January, Zaka Ashraf resigned as the chairman of the PCB Management Committee during a committee meeting. Ashraf, who had taken over from Najam Sethi, cited challenges in working for the betterment of cricket and announced his departure.
During Ashraf’s tenure, Pakistan participated in the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup. However, the team faced setbacks, failing to reach the final of the Asia Cup and falling short of qualifying for the World Cup semi-finals. Naqvi aims to bring positive changes to Pakistani cricket and implement essential reforms.
