Caretaker Federal Minister for Commerce, Industries, and Production, Gohar Ejaz, has assumed the additional responsibility of the Ministry of Interior, the interior ministry announced on Wednesday.
Former Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti stepped down last month citing personal reasons. However, later on he joined the PPP to participate in the upcoming February 8 general elections.
The newly appointed minister wasted no time and immediately visited the Interior Ministry and assumed the charge. On arrival, he was received by senior personnel at the Interior Ministry.
He was briefed on the ministry’s affairs and subsidiaries, said a news release.
The cabinet division notified his appointment through a notification which says: “The Prime Minister, in terms of rule 3(4) of the Rules of Business, 1973, has been pleased to assign the portfolio of Interior to Mr Gohar Ejaz with immediate effect.”
Gohar now serves as the 48th Interior Minister of Pakistan, having assumed office following the announcement.
His appointment is crucial amid the looming elections on February 8 and the main task he has to deal with is to ensure law and order in the country during the electoral process which had already begun with the leaders of different parties are in the field for electioneering except Imran Khan who has not even being given a field at all mainly for his alleged involvement in the May 9 incidents.
The civil and military leadership have already declared the May 9 as a tragedy for the country since the sensitive installations of the country were came under attack as a result of the violent protests that erupted after arrest of Imran Khan in a graft case.
