President Dr Arif Alvi accepted the resignation of Supreme Court’s Justice Ijazul Ahsan on Friday.

He resigned a day after the resignation of Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi.

The resignation was accepted on the advice of Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar , said the President House in a news release.

It added that Justice Ahsan had resigned under Articles 179 and 206(a) of the Constitution.

In his resignation letter, Justice Ahsan expressed the “honour and privilege” he felt in serving at the apex court.

“I no longer wish to continue as a judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan,” he wrote in his resignation.

Justice Ijazul Ahsan was considered a prominent candidate for the role of Chief Justice, expected to assume the position in October 2024.

With Justice Ijazul Hassan’s resignation and Justice Sardar Tariq’s impending retirement, Justice Mansoor is poised to ascend as the most senior judge on the Supreme Court.

Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s anticipated retirement is on October 25, 2024.
