Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan resigns from SC: Reports

Justice Mazahar Naqvi resigned on Wednesday

In a surprising turn of events, Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, tendered his resignation on Thursday, following Justice Mazahar Ali Naqvi’s resignation a day earlier.

According to the media reports, Justice Ijazul Ahsan has formally submitted his resignation to President Dr. Arif Alvi. However, the exact contents of the resignation letter remain undisclosed at this time.

Justice Ijazul Hassan, ranked as the third-most senior judge on the Supreme Court, notably abstained from today’s Supreme Judicial Council meeting.

His absence raises questions about the future leadership dynamics within the judiciary, as Justice Ijazul Ahsan was considered a prominent candidate for the role of Chief Justice, expected to assume the position in October 2024.

The imminent retirement of Justice Sardar Tariq Masood on March 10, 2024, as the second-most senior judge, adds complexity to the situation.

With Justice Ijazul Hassan’s resignation and Justice Sardar Tariq’s impending retirement, Justice Mansoor is poised to ascend as the most senior judge on the Supreme Court.

Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s anticipated retirement on October 25, 2024, further contributes to the unfolding changes in the leadership structure.

In a related development, Justice Ejaz recused himself from participating in the Supreme Judicial Council proceedings concerning Justice Mazahir Akbar Naqvi, who resigned a day ago amid allegations of misconduct.

In his resignation letter, Justice Naqvi expressed gratitude for the honor of serving in both the Lahore High Court and the Supreme Court. He cited the public nature of the information and its impact on his ability to continue as a Supreme Court judge, vehemently denying the allegations against him.
