5-member probe body formed on May 9 incidents

Committee to identify mastermind, planners, facilitators & executors

The Caretaker Federal Cabinet on Saturday constituted a five-member committee which would identify the “role of mastermind, planners, facilitators and executors” of May 9 incidents.

On May 9, Founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan was arrested on graft charges that followed violent protests and vandalism across the country.

Following the May 9 riots, the then civil-military leadership vowed a crackdown on those who planned and executed the conspiracy against the country.

The PTI leadership faced strong reaction following the riots and most of them either left the party or politics and some of them jumped the sinking ship.

Most of the individuals who were allegedly involved in the incidents are currently facing trials in the courts and now the government had decided to fix the collective responsibility by identifying the “role of mastermind, planners, facilitators and executors” of May 9, 2023 incidents

According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division, the caretaker minister for law will head the body while ministers for interior, information and broadcasting and human rights, and any other co-opted member also included in the committee.

The notification also defined the Terms of Reference for the committee that included examination of May 9 incidents with a view to ascertain the identity and role of mastermind, planners, facilitators and executors.

The committee would also analyze the causes, and determine responsibility for these events and to evaluate their immediate and long-term implications.

The committee would suggest preventive measures to ensure that such a breach of national security is not repeated.

The body would also recommend measures to strengthen the existing legal regime to deter such recurrences.
