Govt contradicts reports about GB handover to China

Action will be taken against rumor mongers

The Caretaker Government on Sunday vehemently contradicted reports circulating on social media in certain form of messaging regarding a plan to “handover Gilgit-Baltistan to China for fifty years”.

Posting the fake clipping of a newspaper stating the same on X, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting through its social media account rejected the news as fake.

“Disseminating fake news is not only unethical and illegal but it is also disservice to the nation. It is the responsibility of everyone to reject irresponsible behaviour. Reject #FakeNews,” it wrote on X.

Caretaker Minister of Information and Broadcasting, and Parliamentary Affairs Murtaza Solangi on his X formerly Twitter’s account dubbed such reports as rumors.

He said there was no such news published by any newspaper. “Those spreading this fake news to achieve their nefarious designs will face legal action,” the minister vowed.

The news item, widely shared on social media, claimed that the government discussed handing over the region to China amid deteriorating conditions in Pakistan.

It went on to claim that a Chinese Think Tank has given a nod to the proposal after which China will be able to deploy its armies in the region.

According to the media reports, at least nine were killed and 26 injured when unidentified armed men opened fire on a bus in Chilas city of Gilgit Baltistan earlier this month.

Several passengers hailing from Kohistan, Peshawar, Ghizer, Chilas, Skardu, and Sindh were traveling in the bus which was traveling from Ghizar district to Rawalpindi.
