Pakistan lost 4th position on point table with 62-runs defeat against Australia

Middle order collapse leads to Pakistan's defeat

Australia emerged victorious, defeating Pakistan by 62 runs in a thrilling encounter in a high-stakes World Cup clash at India’s Bengaluru.

Pakistan slips to fifth position on the point table of the world cup after such a dreaded loss to Australia.

Despite a strong start by Pakistan’s openers, a swift collapse in the middle order did not allow Pakistan to chase a high target of 368.

Batting first, Australia’s openers, David Warner (163) and Mitchell Marsh (121), put on a phenomenal 259-run partnership, setting the stage for a formidable total of 367-9.

Warner’s explosive innings was lauded, marking his seventh 150-plus score in ODIs. However, Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi’s impressive bowling performance, claiming 5-54, curtailed Australia’s innings, leading to a late collapse.

In response, Pakistan’s openers, Imam-ul-Haq and Abdullah Shafique, showcased promise with half-centuries, steering their team to a steady start. However, the middle-order stumble proved to be Pakistan’s downfall.

Despite an impressive 131-0 score at the end of the 20th over, they failed to maintain the momentum.

Pakistan’s previous successful run chase, a record-breaking 345-run chase against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad just ten days ago, remained unparalleled in World Cup history. Their endeavor to break this record fell short against Australia’s relentless bowling attack.

The match witnessed notable moments, including Afridi’s remarkable five-wicket haul and Warner’s outstanding century, earning him accolades from the crowd and opponents alike.

In a post-match press conference, Opener Abdullah Shafique said everything was going as per plan but unfortunately, they could not finish the game.

He expressed the resolve to win future games in the World Cup to reach top four finalists.
