Imaan Mazari, Ali Wazir arrested for investigation: ICT Police

Both booked under terrorism charges

The Islamabad Capital Police announced the arrest of human rights lawyer Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir and former lawmaker Ali Wazir on Sunday.
The statement came after Imaan Mazari-Hazir posted on the social media platform “X” (formerly Twitter) that unidentified individuals were breaking into her residence.
The police statement on X stated, “Islamabad Capital Police has arrested Ali Wazir and Imaan Mazari. Both suspects were wanted by the Islamabad Police for investigation. All action will be taken in accordance with law.”
However, the police did not disclose the specific case under investigation involving the human rights lawyer and the former lawmaker from South Waziristan.
The police emphasized that the information provided by the public relations department of the Islamabad Capital Police should be regarded as accurate.
The incident unfolded after Imaan Mazari-Hazir posted a distressing message on X in the early hours of Sunday, alleging that “unknown persons breaking down my home cameras banging gate jumped over.”
Imaan’s mother, Shireen Mazari, addressed the media outside a district and sessions court, reiterating allegations that officials forcibly entered their premises, assaulted their guard, and seized his belongings. The situation escalated when the officials broke down their front door and confronted Imaan, she further alleged.
Imaan Mazari-Hazir and Ali Wazir were subsequently presented before a district and sessions court to face two cases. Judicial Magistrate Ihtasham Alam Khan presided over the proceedings.
According to the court order, the investigating officer (IO) requested a 10-day physical remand for both individuals in connection with a terrorism case. However, the judge ordered that they appear before an anti-terrorism court for the request, with Imaan held at a women’s police station until the following day.
In the second case, the court order revealed that the IO sought a five-day physical remand, but the judge denied Imaan’s physical remand. Instead, she was placed under 14-day judicial remand, with a court appearance scheduled for September 2.
Ali Wazir’s two-day physical remand was granted, contingent on pre and post-medical examinations, with the IO instructed to demonstrate substantial progress in the investigation.
The arrests were made following the registration of two First Information Reports (FIRs) under terrorism charges.
