Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif responded on Sunday to a letter from US President Joe Biden, expressing Pakistan’s willingness to collaborate with the United States on mutual goals of international peace and regional security.
In the letter sent on Friday, President Biden had extended his congratulations to PM Shehbaz, affirming Washington’s commitment to stand alongside Pakistan in addressing global and regional challenges. Notably, this communication marked Biden’s first contact with the new Pakistani administration, highlighting the enduring partnership between the two nations in ensuring global security.
PM Shehbaz’s response, released by the Prime Minister’s Office, reiterated Pakistan’s readiness to cooperate with the US towards achieving global peace and security, as well as fostering regional development and prosperity. He underscored the significance of Pakistan-US relations, emphasizing ongoing collaborative efforts in sectors such as energy, climate change, agriculture, health, and education.
Particularly welcomed was the cooperation in the energy sector and the Green Alliance Framework initiative between the two countries. Notably, Biden’s letter did not include explicit congratulations to PM Shehbaz for assuming office or winning the election, a point noted by experts.
During a recent Congressional hearing, senior US diplomat Donald Lu addressed concerns regarding the recognition of Pakistan’s new government, amidst allegations of electoral irregularities. Representative Tim Burchett questioned whether Washington acknowledged the new administration, prompting Lu to clarify that the US does not formally recognize governments but engages with the regime in power. Lu suggested that Pakistan’s Election Commission may consider reviewing contested contests.
Last month, a group of US Democratic lawmakers urged President Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to refrain from recognizing Pakistan’s new government until allegations of election rigging were thoroughly investigated.
