Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and his spouse, Bushra Bibi, were formally charged on Tuesday by an accountability court in Rawalpindi in connection with the £190 million settlement case of Al-Qadir Trust.
The hearing, presided over by Judge Nasir Javed Rana at Adiala Jail, where Imran Khan is currently held for cases related to Toshakhana, cypher, and unlawful marriage. Both Khan and Bushra were present in the courtroom as the judge read out the charge sheet.
Both Imran and Bushra denied the charges.
Deputy prosecutor Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi and his team from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) also appeared in court.
The NAB had launched an investigation into Imran Khan, his wife, and others over the alleged acquisition of extensive land under the name of Al Qadir University Trust, resulting in a reported loss of 190 million pounds to the exchequer.
During today’s hearing, the court announced that statements from 58 witnesses would be recorded in the case.
The court then summoned five NAB witnesses at the next hearing on March 6.
PTI lawyer Umair Niazi confirmed the indictment and that witnesses have been summoned at the next hearing.
