A man and his wife, who initially claimed to have rushed Lahore Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Shariq Jamal to a private hospital, were taken into custody by the Lahore police on Saturday.
The authorities found their statements suspicious, leading to further investigation into the circumstances surrounding Jamal’s sudden demise.
According to the couple’s initial account, they stated that they had swiftly shifted the police officer from his residence to a private hospital located in Lahore’s DHA area.
However, upon closer scrutiny by the police, inconsistencies emerged in their narrative.
The investigators discovered that Shariq Jamal had, in fact, been at the couple’s flat and was later taken to the medical facility when his health deteriorated.
The unfortunate incident unfolded at approximately 1:30 am when Jamal was brought to the private hospital in DHA, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Clarifying the situation, the police confirmed that Shariq Jamal had not been at his home during the incident but had been at an apartment in Lahore. It was from this location that he was transported to the hospital.
Concerns surrounding the circumstances of Jamal’s sudden death prompted the authorities to launch a thorough investigation into the matter.
While the family expressed their reluctance to conduct an autopsy, the police insisted that it was necessary to determine the cause of the DIG’s “unnatural death.”
Consequently, Jamal’s body was sent to Jinnah Hospital for postmortem examination.
In an effort to gather crucial evidence, a team from the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) joined the police in inspecting the aforementioned apartment. During their examination, they collected samples from food and utensils for further analysis.
