At least 11 people lost their lives while six others sustained injuries when a building’s wall collapsed due to heavy monsoon rains in Islamabad.
As heavy rainfall lashed Islamabad and Rawalpindi, low-lying areas experienced severe waterlogging, causing disruptions and posing potential hazards for residents.
According to police officials the bodies of the deceased, believed to be laborers, were recovered from the debris with the aid of machinery.
The bodies were then shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) for further procedures.
Pims officials confirmed that six injured individuals were also brought to the hospital. One person was discharged after receiving first aid, while the others were stated to be out of danger.
Rescue teams immediately rushed to the scene upon receiving the alert, and conducted rescue operation.
The incident occurred when a building’s wall collapsed upon a tent that the laborers had placed there. The laborers were working on an underpass construction project on the city’s GT Road, as directed by the National Highway Authority (NHA).
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep grief and sorrow over the tragedy and offered prayers for the departed souls. He also issued instructions to the district administration to remain vigilant in light of the heavy rains.
The NHA have denied any links between the collapsed wall and the underpass structure. The NHA expressed sorrow over the incident and assured that the underpass construction site remained safe and sound.
