The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday issued a fresh schedule in line with the directives of the Supreme Court for conducting election in Punjab.
The new schedule was reportedly issued by the ECP after the Supreme Court ruled its previous order regarding delay in Punjab election as unconstitutional and fixed May 14 as new date for the purpose.
According to media reports, the ECP has issued the new schedule which stated that the Punjab election will be held on May 14.The last date for filing an appeal against the Returning Officer’s decision is April 10.
The decision was taken in a meeting which held at the ECP for consultations on the SC verdict.
In its verdict on Tuesday, the top court directed the caretaker government in Punjab to assist the ECP in holding election while the federal government has been asked to provide funds for the purpose.
Meanwhile, the Federal Cabinet has rejected the SC’s verdict, and declared the decision was not impractical.
Senior ministers of the federal government spoke to the media soon after the decision and predicted that the constitutional crises would be deepened in the country which would eventually aggravate the political and economic situation in the country.
However, the main opposition party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf called the verdict a watershed moment in the country’s political history which was marred by the doctrine of necessity.
Talking to the media, PTI Vice Chairperson Shah Mahmood Qureshi said today was very important day in Pakistan’s history as the apex court had restored “sanctity of the Constitution” and buried doctrine of necessity.
