Kanye West dropped ‘Donda’ on Sunday

Kanye West finally released his long-awaited album, named after his late mother, on Sunday morning August 29th. The twenty-two-time Grammy winner put out his 10th studio album weeks after its original listening event in Atlanta; the album was first scheduled to release on July 23rd.

The album is listed to have 27 songs, which feature Kanye’s thoughts on his late mother, who passed in 2007 at age 58, on mental health and on the criminal justice system. The album clocks at 1 hour and 48 minutes, with special collaborations from:

  • Jay-Z.
  • The Weekend.
  • Young Thug.
  • Jay Electronica.
  • The Lox.
  • Travis Sliscott.
  • Lil Baby.
  • Roddy Ricch.
  • Baby Keem.

More on the release front, Kanye took to his Instagram only hours after the release to the online streams and posted about his lack of approval for the release of this album by the parent company to Def Jam, Universal Music Group. He writes “Universal put my album out without my approval and they blocked Jail 2 from being on the album”, the label has yet to respond to such claims.

The fans of the artist have been ecstatic over this highly anticipated compilation as their tweets take over the social media with the hashtag #DONDA.

It‘s 3 AM and I’m still here listening to #DONDA,” writes @Nick52423743

This album is the best thing to happen to me this year,” @kaeelum another Twitterati tweeted.

The appreciation is such that the album ‘Donda’ is already topping the charts.

Kanye also seems to be facing criticism for his inclusion in the album of Marilyn Manson, who was accused of sexual assault by multiple women, and DaBaby, whose homophobic comments earned him a bad reputation. Both had made an appearance at his listening event on Thursday which aided in the backlash. Also, present in this session was Kim Kardashian, dressed in a white gown and veil, spurring speculation of reconciliation among the viewers as West and she had recently gotten a divorce, ending their seven years of marriage, earlier this year.

Lastly, in between getting a very public divorce, the artist has also filed for a legal change of his name to “Ye.”
