‘Malicious campaign’ against top judiciary to be probed

Caretaker govt formed a six-member body

The caretaker government has announced formation of a six-member joint investigation team (JIT) to investigate the “malicious campaign” on social media networking sites against top judiciary.

The body was formed under Section 30 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016, said a notification issued by the interior ministry.

The JIT included members from Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Intelligence Bureaus (IB), Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Police, and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

The body has been tasked to investigate the origins and motives behind the campaign.

The JIT led by Additional Director-General FIA would identify those who have uploaded material against the judges on social media. Those who run anti-judiciary campaigns on social media would be charged and cases would be lodged in the relevant courts.

The JIT would submit a progress report to the ministry of interior within a fortnight.
